When you renovate your bathroom or build one, different questions arise. Between the choice of floor, wall tiles or decoration, you are faced with different options. Like the choice of a shower or a bathtub, which is a crucial step.
But that’s not all. At this point, you also have to choose between a basin and a sink. It’s not always easy to decide, so we give you our advice in this article.
Sink or basin: what are the main differences?
These two pieces of equipment that make up a water point have their own characteristics, which make the difference.
The basin is an integrated equipment or placed on a support, while the sink is independent. The latter is connected directly to the water supply system, which is not the case with the other device. Indeed, the basin has a tap connected indirectly, thanks to a piece of furniture in particular. To make your choice, focus on your aesthetic desires, practicality and functionality.

All our advice to choose your basin: types and their characteristics
There are three distinct types of washbasins: built-in, free-standing and countertop. We explain everything.
The built-in basin:
To begin with, this one is integrated directly into your bathroom furniture, and it rests on a shelf. It is an aesthetic solution that allows you to easily choose the shape you want. It is ideal for optimizing space in a small bathroom.
Although frequently rectangular and square, you can choose an oval or round shape. It has several advantages: maintenance is simple, you have storage and dozens of shapes exist. The only drawback is that it is a rather classic style.
The washbasin to be posed:
For this one, it is placed directly on a piece of furniture previously designed to accommodate it. It is thus in relief on the furniture, and constitutes a design and practical solution. As advantages, we think in particular of its aestheticism, its modernity, its airy style and its great storage capacity. However, its maintenance is more complicated.
The basin top:
Finally, it is a single piece and unique. Above the cabinet, there is only the top which already includes the basin, without any connection. This solution is very watertight, but it is also practical for maintenance. This cabinet is ideal for large bathrooms, but is not feasible in a small room. Moreover, it is not suitable for PRM.
For your bathroom types of sinks and their characteristics:
If, on the other hand, you have a preference for sinks, we present them to you now. As for the basins, they exist in three distinct aspects.
The suspended washbasin:
To begin with, this is a model that is fixed to the wall. For people in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility, this is one of the best solutions. Functional and practical, you can find it in a wide range of sizes, colors and styles. It has several advantages.
As explained above, it is suitable for PRM, as well as for small bathrooms, which need to optimize the space. In addition, it is easy to maintain. However, the piping is visible and no storage space is available.
The column sink:
This second type is in one block, as the foot allows to hide the pipes. A classic solution, it is not very expensive and brings a retro style to the bathroom, which is becoming more and more trendy. You can embed the foot in a base cabinet to dress it up. Its main advantage is to hide the pipes. Nevertheless, it is complicated to add storage.
The totem sink:
This last equipment is very modern, and is a variation of the column. However, it is a single piece, unique, with a hollowed out foot at the top. Very design, it will bring style to your bathroom. Easy to maintain, it is a perfect choice for a contemporary bathroom, and it hides the pipes. On the other hand, it is an imposing piece of furniture, because it is complete and eliminates any possibility of storage.
